Nama Shivaya!

I will be unable to attend the daytime event but would love to attend the evening kirtan. Will there be an opportunity to purchase a ticket for just the evening portion at the door (or prior)?

Thank you so much!!!

I love "bhakti bazaar", I bought it randomly at a yoga show in London (first yoga show I go to... What a funny experience it was), and I liked the look of the colourful cover.
Then I listened to it... And wow.
Been listening to it for weeks on a loop, it's totally inspiring me while I draw and create and just , well, be...

I just cannot thank you enough.
I get chills! I am humming the tunes everywhere!
Bliss.

Thank you.

Blessings,
Hello Dear Jai, Here are some random thought about your connection to bluegrass. I guess your blog post was right on target for me. Music moves the human heart. And Kirtan music moves the human heart to God.
I know that there is true soul connection in all forms of "folk" music. It is the music of love and longing sung by real people. You told me, at a kirtan camp, that kirtan was Indian Folk music. It has always helped me feel more capable of doing the public chanting to remember that I can be a "folk musician."
I have always been a "non-orthodox" chanter. I chant in English, Sanskrit, Hindi, and Arabic. I play guitar, harmonium, flute, or just clap my hands. It is the divine play of love that I want. I did an English version of Shankara's Six Stanzas for Salvation to the tune of House of the Rising Run and played it for a yogi and we laughed and laughed. When I can't take the "commercial yoga" that seems to be dominant in the West, I go and sing with the Shape Note groups (http://fasola.org/) and love that they have been "chanting" in Texas for two hundred years and never made a nickel.
I saw Doc Watson here in Austin in 2009. He sang "Stand By Me" and there was such bhakti in his voice, in his connection to God. I wept. You can't tell me we weren't doing kirtan.
When the storm of life's a ragin',
Stand by me.
When the storm of life's a ragin',
Stand by me.
When the world is tossing me
Like a ship out on the sea,
Thou who rulest winds and waters
Stand by me.

Much Love to you, Nubia, and Ezra,
Tony Godwin

:) You forgot to mention the wonderful secret visit to the Rameshwaram temple late night, as per Sri Ma's wish, so you could do a complete parikrama of the temple and how we were half running half walking to get you past the eyes of all the priests around :)

Hi Jai: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yeah, it can be lonely when you are away from your family so I hope that you'll try to travel together whenever it is feasible. Also, since I am a new fan - I simply went bhakti crazy buying your CDs-no MP3s downloads for me unless CDs are not available. All the CDs are downloaded to my "Bhakti" iTouch-iPod. I especially love the Thunder Love CD-Hanuman's Heart, Bolo Ram and Down on My Kness are favorites. See you at Omega NYC) and Bhakti Fest (Joshua Tree). I'm so excited.

Jai I loved this tale - you are a master storyteller - taking us with you so we can feel the sun on the rocks and smell the spices without a word directly about them. I love best when you speak the stories out loud - this I would love to have - audio book! I always enfoy your long introductions on the discs...

when are you coming back to Byron Bay /Mullumbimby?
much Love. Christopher D

Hey Jai,
What a wonderful story! Reading it I was there with you with Ma, inhaling the sacred air laced with the scent of our Baba. The places, the old pujari, and then Bhibhishan's palace come to life, what a gift. Often I think of him as I live here in Miami (for reasons only He knows), party city and endless distraction loka, identifying with Bhibhishan living in Sri Lanka...
Keep writing, Parvati is right! This is too delicious to keep to yourself. I am looking forward to your book and your love.
Ram Ram.

Please, please....keep on writing your stories, especially about your time in India discovering yourself and Rama. I've just started my second go-around with Ramesh Menon's Ramayana, immediately after finishing it for the first time. Your writing of your time with Ma and visiting these places where Rama and all planned and executed their ascent on Lanka....well its almost as if I was there with you. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Jai, I would like nothing better than to read a book about your adventures in India. Just as you have related above. It would undoubtedly be full of Indian Myths and magic. Who wouldn't be fascinated? But then, I have always been fascinated by India. I would also like to hear how your music evolved in the the wonderful blend of Indian Kirtan and every thing else. You use to do some rock and roll and blue grass in there too. But the Spirit in it is the grace, the love.
An enthusiastic follower of your work

Jai,
By this time you are headed back to India and another visit with Ma . I am sending you blessings and prayers for a save and easy trip . You are a natureal story teller and I agree that a book of some kind is in order, maybe you could dictate and someone else can do the typing . These tales are priceless and inspiring and it is part of your legacy . Don't stress thinking about it just allow it to come to pass. Be very very well.

Jai lovely story, have you read any of Zecharia Sitchin's work? Google him up and search him on youtube. The planet Nibiru? The Annunnaki? I know it's hard to swallow but apparently according to some thousands of clay Sumerian tablets he's translated there was a great war in pre-history between these off world visitors who came here. And the Sumerian's have the same stories as are in the old testament only older. This civilization also pre-dated the Indian and Egyptian. Yet the stories are similar. Great beings, great wars, great tales of the (what could only be understood as celestial or angelic) beings from elsewhere who were instrumental in our being here today. Throws a new slant on the Mahabharata, the Gita, Genisis. I think you'll find him interesting. The New York Times interviewed him recently and there's video in their archive. He's an 80ish New York Jew, funny, upper west side I believe, still very active writer, a professor. Yours truly, one of the faithful, Tim Andres Kauai

thank you Jai for weaving these stories together... -- your personal one and our collective one...beautiful! Why is it that the Ramayana is so familiar to everyone...it's been a few years since my beloved story-telling, philosopher-mother-in-law passed on (one of those formidably strong, wise elders in thin saris and flip-flops!) but I can easily still be sitting at her feet in the afternoon while she tells our 4-year-old about Rama & Sita & Ravana & the mighty loyal Hanuman...both of us rapt with attention and wanting to hear it over and over. It's a story that resonates with most everyone i think, and children especially totally GET IT! They live in that soup of love and loyalty and intention and devotion (at least for a while) so it all makes sense to them...
thanks for sharing and reminding. Keep 'em coming when you can...
(My husband told me about the NASA finding...there was also some furor over the Indian gov't. possible plan to blow up portions of the underground stone causeway (!) to make it easier for ship passage...i believe many many Indians were apoplectic)

Well...today...having little patience for many of the mundane tasks beckoning me...I DID find the patience to read right through to the end. Thank you. Your story connected me to my heart...my heart's longing, actually...and transported my spirit from the mundane to the magical. I, too, know that each moment holds the potential for magic...yet some days we need a little help, right? At least...I do :). Thanks for taking the time to write and speak the language of the heart...where we all meet...as ONE. Jai Ma!

I love your honesty, and openess to such a wide growing public as more and more people come to know your music and you. I feel that is so humble of you. I appreciate that in you. I also see totally what you mean about the movement these days. Seems to be what America does with everything, one day it will fall back to the raw truth of everything...again...so much love to you and your beautiful family. I am so glad for you... I hope to see you at Kripalu again soon...

Jaiji, Thanks for taking the time to write your blogs, I really enjoy them. I guess I'm a fellow curmudgeon today ha ha! Your comments on the "Bhakti Movement" reflect my own feelings. It is weird to see something so profound turned into a "fad". Someone mentioned to me the other day that the "Kirtanika"scene is passe. Who knew? I hope the Bhakti Movement will truly touch hearts in a spiritual way. With the warmest Aloha to you and your family, Jen

I am so happy to read this. The story is beautiful, but it's your introductory words which struck a chord. My husband and I were just at Breitenbush with you, Jai. When we came home our friends asked excitedly "How was it???" And I paused...and thought: sometimes really great (that "Bhakti 'high'") and sometimes it just "was" whatever it was in the moment -- special or not. But what I mostly came back with was a place to turn in my heart whether feeling great or struggling with life challenges....I have taken up a silent mantra: 'Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram...." I thank you for that awakening.

What a story! Another example of peoples fears and insecurities making them kill and torture their fellow human beings in the name of some moral system or ideas.... So sad and still going on so much in the world.... Does it make them feel so much more secure and better with themselves in their lives thereafter to make it all worth it? It is not always so easy to forgive them for they are not concious of what they are really doing there...

I understand what your talking about the kirtan "high". Looking für the next high to avoid ever feeling empty, sad, angry, alone, pain, helpless or any other so called negative feelings? A life on the run in bright sunlight without it ever becoming dark? Everything is great and nice and amazing? This is exactly why I am not so interested in coming to the US despite all the beauty of the land and nature. I encounter a culture that I find not easy to relate to very profoundly many times. But I come for your kirtan now and this is really the only reason that would be important enough for me. I have prayed with the native americans for over 20 years now and it has been a path of deep devotion and also discipline, sacrificing your flesh and physical comfort many times in a warriors way. To pray through ecstasy instead of pain and sacrifice has been a great change for me in the past years getting into tantra and now a little bit into kirtan. There are aspects of softness and gentleness in there that are very becoming on the long run...

Namasté,

Birte from Germany

I encounter a culture that I find not easy to relate to very profoundly many times. But I come for your kirtan now and this is really the only reason that would be important enough for me. I have prayed with the native americans for over 20 years now and it has been a path of deep devotion and also discipline, sacrificing your flesh and physical comfort many times in a warriors way. To pray through ecstasy instead of pain and sacrifice has been a great change for me in the past years getting into tantra and now a little bit into kirtan. There are aspects of softness and gentleness in there that are very becoming on the long run…

Namasté,

Jai Radhe Shyam!

Beautiful story, Jai. I love you for doing this blog, too, more please!

This is the importance of satsang! We need people like you to remind us that there is always room to love deeper, that beneath the joy and bliss there is something infinitely more vast and profound. To never stop surrendering every moment, every experience at the lotus feet of our beloved guru or god. Otherwise we're all in danger of stalling on the path, mesmerized by our preferences for this kirtan or that yoga class—or stuck in our aversions to slow bhajans, japa, meditation, etc.

I used to go to kirtans and say to myself, "Oh, the energy is really shallow," or "Wow, it's really deep," and I would credit or blame the kirtan singer accordingly, until one day it occurred to me that there is no limit to how deeply we can be present to divine love in every moment—it's completely our own choice. As long as we depend on aesthetics to determine how open we are, we're doomed. The story you shared here about Chandidas is so beautiful and relevant. Thank you, Jai.

Love,
P.

Jai! Sheesh man, what a story. Electrifying. And, dissappointing... having just spent a couple months in West Bengal, I may have entertained the illusion that there was at least *that* place where mystics were revered rather than persecuted. Oh well, I guess even West Bengal, land of so many Bhakti saints, has that kind of darkness woven into its history.

What a moment, that thunderbolt recognition... Radha. What a mystery. Wow.
Lotsa love,
DT

Dear Jai,
now that you mention it: I often wished to experience more humility in kirtan events, lately. But maybe that's because I am only a square German ;-)
We have a saying here stating that soft tones form a melody, too.
I'd like to encourage less boosting. Isn't it prayer in the first place?
But then again: the important thing is we're singing at all...
Lots of love, Sibylle
